It was thirty years ago... around this time...

… that Bruce Springsteen & the E Street Band kicked off their first full-blown European tour. They had visited London, Amsterdam and Stockholm six years previously, on the infamous Euro stint of the Born to Run Tour that is mostly known for Bruce tearing down his own posters. But by 1981, halfway through the extensive River Tour, he had recovered enough from that experience to once again take the band across the pond. And this time it was intended to be more than a brief promo.... Read more

Bruce rock 'n' folked with Dropkick Murphys

Published 2011-03-19
By Karsten S. Andersen
It was a public secret for days before it happened: Bruce Springsteen was going to show up at the last of three Dropkick Murphys shows at the House of Blues in Boston. And much to the delight of the crowd, he sure did. Just a few days after making one of his traditional appearances at the somewhat more sedated Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame induction show in New York, Bruce joined the Irish American celtic punk band for three songs: "Peg O' My Heart", his own "Badlands" and.... New releases and a crowning

Published 2011-03-09
By Karsten S. Andersen
After a long period of nothing, the last couple of days have suddenly exploded in Bruce news. No, no new album or tour, but at this point we'll take anything we get. First of all, there's a new release coming out on May 5. Well, "new" may be stretching it. It's a separate release of The Promise: The Making of Darkness on the Edge of Town documentary that was included in The Promise box set. As a bonus, the disc will also include the five-song webcast that was broadcast online in.... Read more

The Bruce Librarian Vol. III: Finding Grace in the Concert Hall

A book about Bruce is not just a book about Bruce. There are several types of Bruce books: everything from the traditional biography to picture books and guitar tab books. One sub-genre is not very well-known. You won’t find it in many bookstores, except possibly in college bookstores or other very specialized places, and it’s not the kind of book you want to give to the casual fan who wants to know a little bit more about Bruce Springsteen. What I’m talking about is.... Bruce rocks for the Ranney School

Published 2011-01-30
By Karsten S. Andersen
The annual benefit show for the Ranney School, which has one or more of Bruce's kids attending classes, took place last night at the Stone Pony. Concept was the same as always: only access for employees of the school, plus parents of students, and the parents even had to shell out big money to be there. But no doubt everybody in attendance felt they got their money's worth as Bruce delivered his usual three-hour show of high energy rock 'n' roll featuring both covers and originals. This.... Bruce makes first live appearance of 2011

Published 2011-01-16

As has become a great habit for him, Bruce showed up at last night's Light of Day benefit show at the Paramount Theater in Asbury Park. As usual, his presence hadn't been announced, but that didn't stop him from showing up and joining the usual suspects Joe Grushecky, Jesse Malin, Willie Nile and Alejandro Escovedo for a long night of great rock 'n' roll. After guesting with the three last-mentioned for one song each, Bruce took the stage for solo acoustic versions of "Your Own Worst.... Read more

Greasy Lake Reviews: The Promise - The Darkness on the Edge of Town Story

Published 2010-12-26
By Karsten S. Andersen
Reviewing The Promise box actually makes as much sense as Reader’s Digest reviewing The Holy Grail. In many ways The Promise defies all earthly attempts to describe, label or criticize. It is the Holy Grail for Springsteen fans. Even after its release, going through the list of contents makes you wonder if it was all just a dream. Did we really get a complete 1978 show on DVD? Was there really a camera present during the fabled Darkness sessions? A double album of Darkness outtakes? No.... Read more

Merry Bruce Christmas!

Christmas is over us and 2010 is running out of time. Greasy Lake would like to wish you a Merry Christmas, Happy Hanukkah, Festive Festivus, or whatever you're celebrating. If you're among the people who didn't get the Darkness box yet, hopefully it will be under the Christmas tree for you. From a Bruce perspective that box has been the definite highlight of the year and will be hard to surpass for Bruce in 2011. But, if anyone can do it, it would be him. Within the next few days I will.... Read more

Webcast starting to show up

The live performance from December 7, where Bruce and the E Street Band performed for a very limited number of people at the Casino in Asbury Park, has started to show up online as an official Christmas webcast. We can't tell you what it contains, because so far you can only watch in in the US through something called or if you're in the UK through The Guardian's website. While the webcast is probably bound to show up in other countries before too long, this geographical.... Read more
